ALFRED E. DAY
Alfred E. Day
Alfred E. Day, one of six children, was born on August 24, 1898 in Henderson, Texas.
He came from families who pioneered East Texas in the late 1880s. Mr. Day’s family was full of educators. Educated at Texas A.&.M., he himself served many years as a teacher and administrator, including eighteen years as principal of the Center High School in Center, Texas.
In 1944, Alf Day moved his wife, Lucille, and daughters, Carolyn and Dorothy (Dottie) to Minden, Louisiana where he owned Day Tire and Supply Store. Here he sold tires, appliances, hardware, and paint supplies. Alf continued in this occupation until 1956, at which time he returned to the teaching profession.
Mr. Day taught sixth grade and substituted as principal in Minden until his retirement in 1961. Always concerned with quality education of children and youth, he later ran for a school board position in Webster Parish and won in 1964. He diligently served in this position until ill health forced him to resign in March of 1969.
Mr. Day was an avid golfer, looking forward on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons to a round of golf at the Minden Pine Hills Country Club of which he was a member. It was on a Sunday afternoon in September of 1968, as he was getting ready for another golf round, that he suffered a major heart attack. He never recovered fully from this attack, thus spending his last years at home enjoying family and the care of his faithful wife, Lucille.
Alfred E. Day died on January 5, 1972, in Minden, Louisiana. He was highly respected and admired by many as a dignified Southern gentleman with integrity and high morals, a man dedicated to the service of his community.
