ATTENDING MHS DURING THE EIGHTIES

BY MARSHALL KING

The Valedictorian of the Class of '89 was Wendy Purtle, daughter of Homer and Wanda Purtle. Wendy graduated from Duke

University. She married a few years ago, but I don't know her married name.

The head coach of that football team was Steve Brasher.  The principal was Matt Martin, and the Assistant Principals were N. A.

Jones and Mrs. Boyett, J. R. Boyett's wife. I ran into Mr. Boyett at Minden Athletic" about 6 months ago, and he hasn't changed

a bit. If you could contact him I'm sure he'd have a plethora of Minden information for you spanning the 70s, 80's, and 90's. He was

very active in the community, especially with little league football and baseball. He dedicated a lot of time to the kids of Minden

when it came to sports. He's a really good man.

The 1987 Grig was titled "Bustin Loose". It was actually a denim colored book with the picture of jean pocket on it. I'm sure

this ruffled the feathers of traditionalists who wanted a red and white Grig instead. And looking back, I agree with the traditionalists.

The yearbook editor was Jani Woodall, if I remember correctly.

My sister graduated in 1981, and was a cheerleader. I've sent her an e-mail asking her for information regarding her time at MHS.

When I get her response I will forward it to you. I know that Minden High's baseball won back to back State Titles in 81-82-83. The

Stars of at least one of those teams were Randy Ray and Kenny Whitfield. In one of those games, Whitfield hit a walk-off homerun in

the last inning to win the State Championship game, which was played at Griffith Stadium in Minden. The head Coach of those teams

was Marvin Jones. Ray was drafted by the Montreal Expos, and Whitfield was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. Neither made it past

the minors, but still quite and accomplishment. Ray now runs "Randy Ray Manufactured Homes" in Minden.
